Believe Hope Change

If you're going to vote, I think you should vote for someone that will create the change that we need in this country. I know I might get in trouble because players aren't supposed to voice their political opinions, but I really think that Senator Obama is the right man to lead this country. I encourage everyone to go out on Election Day and let your voice be heard. I am voting, but with much apprehension.

No one really speaks to me. Although I hear the message of Barack Obama and I like the video, my main problem is that everyone seems to expect massive changes, but no one seems to have any idea how that's going to happen. If Obama wins presidency, our economy is still going to be crashing to the ground when he takes office.

Even in the video, Ovie and everyone else talks about what's wrong with our country. But how can we make it right? I want to hear some better plans besides, "When Kennedy said he was going to the moon, no one knew how to do it but eventually we made it happen."

On the other hand, you could have a 72-year old curmudgeon in office. And if he dies, you could have, we can only hope, President Palin.

People who say that you shouldn't voice your opinion, because you are a sports person and sport and politics should be seperate, are missing the point. Your politics does not affect the way you perform on the field, so in that way, sports and politics are not mixing at all.

But if you feel strongly about something like this, then you have the platform, as a high-profile sportsperson, to speak out and to be heard. There are plenty of people who feel just as strongly but they don't have the platform to put that point of view forward. If you feel strongly and you have the platform, it is surely not only your right, but your duty to speak for the many who can't.

I won't say if I agree with your choice of candidate, but my opinion on your right - duty, even - to stand up remains the same regardless.

As a small side-issue, having a high-profile personality talking about the election will surely only help raise awareness and increase debate (as it clearly has on this page) and increase numbers at the polls. In country which champions democracy so strongly all over the world, surely this is a good thing.

If Obama doesn't win, I will have to come up with an exit strategy on leaving this country, because I fear what might happen to me and my family if I stay. Where would be the cheapest to live? Mexico? I can learn to speak spanish!

My whole life (since I've been old enough to vote) I have voted for the Democratic Party in every election. After loosing the last two my heart was broken and I felt like the world of NASCAR Dad's and Dadfare Mom's let us down and did not look at what is important. This year, I don't know if I can vote for the Democratic candidate, I think he says whatever he thinks folks want to hear and will do whatever is best for him. He is not Bill Clinton; you shouldn't think that if you vote for him it will be like having Clinton back. He knew Akers was a terrorist, yet he still worked with him, and just last night he named others who worked with him that were Republicans. If Obama really was for change, then why didn't he go against what everyone else was doing (working with Akers) and refuse to work with a terrorist?

I served in the Marine Corps and Obama not respecting the Pledge of Allegiance is a sore spot. It hurts me that he can't put his hand on his heart.

McCain seems like he has half a mind and isn't completely there. Scary.

I agree with ChumpNetwork. This is voting for the lesser of two evils.

  I agree with you. However just because McCain was in the military doesn't mean he knows how to fix Their bureaucratic mess. First of all, think about all of these soldiers that are surviving. (barely). They are coming home with PTSD, and missing limbs, and so on. What kind of help are they going to be able to give? They barely take care of the Vietnam vets. I can only imagine how hard it will be for them Now in no way am I saying that this is McCain's fault or anything like that. I am just saying the guy has like ten houses, and I am sure he is cluesless to the problems of the common person.
  
  I will give you just one of the hundred examples of what I am talking about..
  
  My father served as a marine in Vietnam. He is like in mid fifties now. He had a stroke a few years back, and the VA is supposed to cover all of his medications and health issues. A couple of weeks ago, we went on a trip to Plymouth to go Whale watching, my father had forgotten his medication. Well we figured we could call the VA and they could call in a temp prescription for a one day dose. The nurse at the VA said they "don't do that" They wouldn't provide the medication.
  
  So I asked her. "Why won't you do this? If you have medical professionals that can provide medication why can't they provide a prescription. What if he has a seizure?"
  You know what she said to me?
  
  "well if it is so important, why did he forget it?" What a f-in b*tch. If I had been anywhere near the VA I would have drove down there and kicked her a$$ in front of everyone.
  
  That is sick. The guy has had 2 brain injuries! That's why he forgot you f-in bureaucratic wh*re!! I hope this happens to you some day. Where you need help and no one will give it to you because of some f-d up rule that the VA made up. Whenever my father needed help, they did not want to give it. I can only imagine what other veterans have to go through that may have had not as severe a problem then my father does. We have to pull teeth, get the community involved, call our senators, to help these veterans get benefits, and the aid they need. It shouldn't be that way.
  
  You see these guys on the street? It's because no one wants to help them. They are mentally ill, or physically sick. Either way the government makes it very difficult to obtain health care once they are released from duty. It is sick and bureaucratic at its finest.
  
  So when I hear McCain talk about being in Iraq for 8 to 100 years, and envisioning occupying OTHER countries as well, I feel sick in my stomach. Because I know how it is, and I am sure people in the military, as much as they love their country, know how this country treats its fellow soldiers. Perhaps McCain can find a Cindy McCain for some of these soldiers in need. That way they don't have to worry about how to fix the system, they can just feed off of the rich.

Something that needs to be thought about is Sarah Palin. What if McCain were to die. She knows absolutly nothing about anything other than how to hunt and reproduce. We need someone with a working knowledge of the history of politics in the USA. She couldn't name one supreme court case aside from Roe vs. Wade. She had problems talking about John McCain. She is an embarrasment to females everywhere and should never be within 30,000 feet of the White House.

You act like Obama is going to come in here and change everything like the War, and a failing economy. He has all ready stated in one debate that he was going to fight the war in places it matters like Afghanistan and not Iraq, hence he is not going to pull troops out immediately, and his top financial advisors are the same folks who ran Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into the ground. And Pink I do remember you on one of the Dean's threads crapping on the bailout plan, well guess what, the Democrates were the driving force behind this bill, it failed at first because there were not enough votes to make it pass. Guess which party did not vote majority on it? You got it the Republicans. Also, this national healthcare bill he wants to go through is going to be another slap in capitalism's face because of the fact that, according to Obama, that whoever can get it. So that means that taxpaters have to foot the bill for a guy that is healthy enough to work, but would rather be a worthless POS and sit on his Mamma's or stripper girlfriends couch and watch TV and smoke the weed before he would get off his lazy azz and be a productive member of society and contribute to his own healthcare and that of his families. This is not right nor is it American. These socialist beliefs are going to destroy this country and everything we have been fighting for over the past 200 years. Capitalism is not dead, the civic duty of the American people are and we are going to let the unemployable, the uneducated and the criminals dictate our future because Mommy didn't love them and Barack feels like it is the rest of our responsibilities who have done the right thing and made something of ourselves and get up and go to work everyday so we can take care of our own to carry the woes of , not just the unfortunate, but the unwilling.

I think it is sad when people think just because people are athletes they should not be able to voice their opinion on politics. They are Americans, same people as you and me, only their job is in the public eye. I think it is GREAT when an athlete can voice their opinions on politics. It shows they are educated and actually care about their country. Thank you Ovie, I love that you stand up for what you believe in. Keep it up :-)

change? is wealth redistribution the change you want? if so you are going to be sad. anyone with any sense realizes that when "big corporations" are taxed they pass it on to the consumer through price increases or layoffs. as a small business owner i will layoff two employees and cut benefits, some change. good luck

  actually not to sound like I am correcting you but trickle down economics is the idea that if the corporations get huge tax cuts then they will in turn give their profits to the employees and boost the economy. It has never worked. Ask both Bush administrations and Reagan. Or just look to our friends in the insurance and loan industries.

People too often vote for the wrong reason. Who cares if McCain is old or that Obama is african american, who is more qualified to lead this country. Also a disclaimer here I am not saying Obama being the first black president would be insignificant I just think too often people vote for entirely the wrong reasons, If you are going to vote please be an educated voter.

I know I'll get hit with bad comments, but... In 2000, I was pro McCain. In 2004, I voted for Bush. But in 2008, I will vote Obama. I miss the 90's soo badly, in terms of economics. Pretty much, if this were any other candidate, I would probably vote McCain. This guy is from Illinois, the previous 2 Illinois presidents weren't bad: Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan.

Ovie, I'm definitely with you on this one.

I agree with you 100%. Unfortunatly there will be a lot of people who will not vote this year, and that is a tragedy. I agree with ATBarnes. Do not vote for someone due to their race, age, or sex. Do not vote for someone because they are a fashionable person, etc... Vote for the person who is going to be the best for this country. The person who is going to change our country for the better. Before you vote, look at where each person stands on important issues. I think women would be interested to know, that Cosmo Mag put in a great article on where the two candiates stand on issues pertaining to women. So please everyone who can registar, go registar. And for those who can vote, go vote. You can't complain about the way the country is, unless you vote.

People need to really look into what this guy stands for. If you look deep, you will find that his perception on America is pretty shocking. Look at the two candidates, and ask yourself which one has given his whole life (and almost payed the ultimate price) for this country, and which one has lived his life learning to bash it.

Being a Falcons fan for 35 years has prepared me for long periods of depression so I'm ready for President Obama, Pelosi and Reed.

Wow, I am still shocked that so many comments were deleted… especially since many of them were not racist, but merely criticisms of Obama or his plans. Pink, I guess you'll be glad to know that I shall stop coming to Yardbarker as often as I once did; for I cannot stomach censorship - I may disagree with you Pink on every issue, but I would not censor your opinions or thoughts merely because I disagree… too bad Yardbarker cannot say the same.

glad to see such a great response from my people on the yard. i havent had a chance to respond to anyone bc i just came back from the bye week. but i definitelly can say that i dont want anyone to vote for a candidate just because i say so. Do your own research and know that you have the responsibility to put the best person to lead the country in office. So make sure you go out there and vote and bring someone with u. Ill be responding to more comments as the week goes by

I have a hard time stomaching what this nation will be like with a socialist-like president. It scares me to death, but it seems like that is the nation I will be a part of for four full years. This is not the change that people are expecting, or even wanting. People want change because they are fed up with Bush. Hey, I understand. That's no reason to support radical change. I urge you that before you do indeed cast your vote, think how much of a radical change you desire.
