The Chicago White Sox have officially signed right-handed pitcher Cody Sedlock to a minor league deal, marking a significant step in the player's comeback journey.

Sedlock, a former first-round pick by the Baltimore Orioles in 2016, has had a rollercoaster career, dealing with injuries and setbacks. Thoracic outlet surgery, as well as injuries to his forearm and shoulder, hindered his journey to the Majors.

The right-handed pitcher spent six years in the Orioles minor league system before getting the opportunity to pitch in the big leagues in 2022. An opportunity that was rather short-lived.

A Look into Sedlock's Career

In his lone Major League appearance, Sedlock worked three innings of relief giving up six hits and five runs, walking one and striking out three. He was designated for assignment shortly after and outrighted back to Triple-A, before being traded to the Detroit Tigers ahead of the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline in exchange for cash considerations.

In an interview with KWQC, Sedlock noted that he almost signed with the White Sox in February of 2023, but the offer was pulled after an MRI showed damage to his UCL.

“I actually was about to sign with the White Sox last February and then they pulled the offer because of an old MRI on my elbow showing a partial tear on my UCL,” Sedlock said. “My UCL was about to blow out. I was distraught. I was like I’m not gonna get Tommy John surgery on a healthy elbow like I don’t know what’s going on.”

After undergoing Tommy John surgery and spending the 2023 season away from baseball, Sedlock is now with the team that almost signed him just a year prior.

The former first-rounder will report to Arizona for extended Spring Training, and will likely find his way to Triple-A Charlotte and provide the team with extra pitching depth down the stretch.
